The United Nations Agrees on an Ocean Biodiversity Treaty

March 6, 2023
Filed Under: Ocean Health, Human Health

On March 4, 2023 United Nations members agreed on a historic treaty to protect biodiversity in the high seas, the regions outside national boundary waters.  Global cooperation has been lacking and is necessary to address ocean conservation and sustainably issues due to commercial fishing, mining, plastic and chemical pollution.

The new treaty governed by a yet to be establish body will establish new marine protected areas. As well as limit exploitation of fishing and set regulations for mineral mining exploration activities. And establish shipping routes to not interfere with the long migrations of some marine species such as whales, dolphins, and sea turtles.  This treaty will aid the United Nations in achieving its ambitious goal to protect 30% of the global ocean and land for the conservation and preservation of the planet.

The ratification of this treaty is paramount to protect and restore the global ocean for the health of humanity.  All life depends on healthy ocean ecosystems. Healthy Oceans = Healthy People.
