The ocean is many things to many people. It’s a place to play, to breathe, to think, to explore, and to reconnect with ourselves and others. But what do everyday Americans say makes an ocean experience truly meaningful?

To answer this, HOHP analyzed responses from more than 1,100 adults across the United States who shared memories from the ocean, the beach, or other marine places. Their responses reveal seven major themes about ways the ocean shapes our lives.

Here’s what we learned.

1. Seeing Marine Wildlife Feels Magical (22%)

The most common meaningful experiences involved seeing ocean animals in the wild.
People talked about dolphins leaping at sunset, sea turtles swimming by, or spotting a shark from shore. These moments created feelings of excitement, awe, and gratitude.

Many described wildlife encounters as rare gifts, something they would remember forever.
Seeing animals in their natural home helped people appreciate how alive and mysterious the ocean really is.

2. The Ocean Helps People Feel Calm and Restored (16%)

For many, the ocean is a place to breathe again.

Participants said the ocean helps them cope with stress, clear their minds, and feel grounded. Watching waves, listening to the surf, and seeing the horizon brought peace and comfort. Some described the ocean as their “peaceful place” or a spot where the world feels quieter and more manageable.

These calming moments show how strongly the ocean supports emotional well-being.

3. Adventure Brings People Closer to the Ocean (14%)

Swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, tide-pooling, and other water activities were another major theme.
People remembered:

  • Kayaking beside playful sea lions
  • Snorkeling above coral and fish
  • Body surfing in warm waves

These activities helped people feel more connected to nature and more aware of how important a healthy ocean is.

4. The Ocean Brings Families and Friends Together (13%)

Many stories centered on memories with loved ones. Families described beach days, bonfires, long walks, and vacations spent near the water. Others shared romantic moments—proposals, weddings, and anniversaries celebrated by the sea.

The ocean, for many, is a backdrop for bonding, laughter, and connection.

5. Some Simply Said: “It Was Great.” (15%)

A large number of people answered in a single word:

“Great.”
“Good.”
“Nice.”
“Fun.”

Even short responses show a positive emotional tie. Not every meaningful moment needs a long explanation, sometimes just being near the water creates a memory worth keeping.

6. People Want to Take Care of the Ocean (7%)

Stories about helping the ocean also stood out. Participants shared moments when they:

  • rescued stranded animals
  • removed trash
  • untangled wildlife from fishing line

These experiences made people feel responsible for protecting the ocean. Small personal actions like returning a crab to the water or cleaning up plastic were powerful reminders that our choices matter.

7. Some Feel a Deep Sense of Oneness or Spiritual Meaning (5%)

A smaller but important group described the ocean as a spiritual place. They talked about:

  • feeling “one” with nature
  • healing during hard times
  • moments of reflection and gratitude
  • experiencing the ocean as a sacred space

For these individuals, the ocean is more than a place—it is a source of meaning, comfort, and emotional renewal.

Why These Themes Matter

These seven themes show that the ocean shapes people’s lives in many different ways. Whether through wildlife, recreation, healing, or connection, meaningful ocean experiences help people care more deeply about the ocean—and may inspire them to take action to protect it.

When people feel connected to the ocean, they are more likely to:

  • reduce plastic use
  • support conservation efforts
  • engage in beach cleanups
  • make sustainable choices

At HOHP, we believe that protecting the ocean starts with appreciating it. These stories remind us that the ocean touches us in ways that are emotional, social, and deeply human.
