1. During the process of photosynthesis phytoplankton convert carbon dioxide, water and sunlight into nutrients and release oxygen. Ocean photosynthesis provides over 50% of the world’s oxygen supply, which is essential for all life on Earth to survive.

2. Photosynthesis in the ocean helps with climate control. It helps to control the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which helps to mitigate the effects of climate change.

3. Photosynthesis in the ocean by phytoplankton is foundation of the marine food web which makes it possible for us to enjoy fish and seafood which are important sources of protein for many people globally.
